TOWN CENTER ENHANCEMENT IN METROPOLITAN LONDON - Design studies on housing intensification
The London Development Agency and Design for London guide the overall developments and key projects in the London Metropolitan Region. The basis for its interventions is The London Plan, which aims to accommodate growth with over 1 million inhabitants in the existing urban area. One of the strategies to achieve this is to add housing into the existing centers of outer London. In 2004-2005, Luc Vrolijks (then director of Urhahn Urban Design) led a design-based study on ten locations in North London. The study demonstrates how urban renewal and intensification can enhance metropolitan London and contribute to its economic and social vitality. In 2007-2008, a similar study was prepared for South London. Luc Vrolijks served as a strategic advisor for that study, which was implemented by his previous company Urhahn. This study was published by the London Development Agency in March 2009.
