In Memoriam: Luc Vrolijks
13-06-1959 // 01-08-2011
It is with great sadness that his family, friends and colleagues have learned of the untimely death of Luc Vrolijks on 1 August 2011 in Brazil.
We will remember Luc as a most warm person, an outstanding professional, a particularly intelligent and competent urban planner. He was a master in bringing people together and creating the conditions for beautiful things to happen. For almost a quarter of a century Luc worked as an urban planner in the Netherlands and beyond, specialising in sustainable development and climate adaptation for neighbourhoods, cities and regions.
Between 1987 and 1996 he lived and worked in Benin, Indonesia, Fiji, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Working at Urhahn Urban Design in Amsterdam, since 1998 as a director, he was involved in more than 70 inner-city renewal projects as well as local and regional studies and plans. Mention may be made of the Master Plan Rijnboog in Arnhem and of renewal plans for two medium-sized cities in England, Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth.
In 2006 he established his Urban Progress Studio in Amsterdam, providing strategic advice and consultancy services. Since he set up Urban Progress Design in New York, in 2009, he was actively sharing ‘best practices’ between the Netherlands and the United States. Most recently he initiated the ‘Glimpses - New York and Amsterdam in 2040’, a project resulting since last June in exhibitions in Amsterdam and New York.
